CSX files Pan Am Merger Application with Federal Regulators

CSX Transportation has told federal regulators that its proposed acquisition of regional Pan Am Railways will improve service, capture business from trucks, and boost railroad competition in New England. CSX’s merger application, posted today on the Surface Transportation Board website, also resolves a thorny issue: Who will operate Pan Am Southern, the joint venture that provides Norfolk Southern access to New England.

Watco Moves Into South Dakota

Watco subsidiary Ringneck & Western Railroad LLC is purchasing the 285-mile Mitchell to Rapid City rail line in South Dakota. The South Dakota State Railroad Board authorized the South Dakota Department of Transportation to sell the line for $13 million.

U.S. Farmers Are Planting More Row Crops Than Ever

U.S. farmers are expected to plant a record amount of acres this year to take advantage of high agricultural prices after years of tough market conditions. The U.S. Department of Agriculture projects that farmers will plant 182 million acres of corn and soybeans in 2021.

U.S. Durable-Goods Climbed 3.4% in January

Demand for long-lasting manufactured goods jumped in January, as the U.S. economic recovery gained momentum at the start of the year. New orders for durable goods—products designed to last at least three years, such as computers and machinery—increased 3.4% to a seasonally adjusted $256.6 billion in January compared with December, the Commerce Department said Thursday.

U.S. Silica Holdings, Inc. Announces Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2020 Results

U.S. Silica Holdings, Inc. today announced net income of $4.6 million, or $0.06 per basic and diluted share, for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2020, compared with a net loss of $292.9 million, or $3.99 per basic and diluted share, for the fourth quarter of 2019. The fourth quarter results were negatively impacted by $4.1 million of charges related to asset impairments, facility closure costs, a plant capacity expansion, and other expenses.

Europe’s Rail partnership, the successor to the current Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking, has been officially announced today by the European Commission as part of a proposal for the set-up of 10 new European Partnerships under the Horizon Europe programme. All the partnerships share the objective of achieving a climate neutral and digital Europe.
