Winter Weather Wallops US Rail Traffic

U.S. rail volumes took a hit last week from the extreme winter weather experienced in the southern and central regions of the country. Overall U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Saturday slipped 21.7% to 377,904 carloads and intermodal units, according to the Association of American Railroads.

Biden Orders Review of Transportation Sector

An executive order to be signed Wednesday by President Joe Biden includes a one-year review of transportation networks as well as a review of supply chains for four products considered critical in addressing national emergencies. As FreightWaves reported earlier this month, Biden planned to use an executive order to make good on a campaign promise to review critical supply chains and reduce American dependence on imports for pandemic-related equipment and materials.

Buttigieg, Alghabra Commit to ‘Reinvigorate’ U.S., Canada Transportation Partnership

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra will team “to fight climate change and limit the environmental impacts” from the countries’ transportation networks, USDOT and Transport Canada announced on Feb. 25.

U.S. New Home Sales Blow Past Expectations in January

Sales of new U.S. single-family homes increased more than expected in January, boosted by historically low mortgage rates and an acute shortage of previously owned houses on the market. The report from the Commerce Department on Wednesday suggested the housing market would continue to underpin the economy’s recovery from the COVID-19 recession.

Cargill Inc. has named Brian Sikes its chief operating officer, it announced Tuesday. Sikes will also take a role on Cargill's board of directors.

SAR Says Progress of $7bn Land Bridge Mega Project Is in ‘Full Swing’

Saudi Railways Company (SAR) has announced that work is in full swing on all its major infrastructure developments, including the Land Bridge project which links the seaports on the Red Sea coast to the seaports on the Arabian Gulf, via Riyadh. According to a report by the Saudi Gazette, the Saudi Land Bridge project was part of Saudi Railways Organisation’s (SRO) railway expansion programme.
