US Class I Rail Headcount Sinks to Near Decade Low

The number of employees working for the U.S. operations of the Class I railroads in January fell to its lowest level in years, according to data received by the Surface Transportation Board. U.S. Class I railroad operations had 113,461 employees working in their ranks in January, an 11.6% drop from January 2020 and a 3.7% decline from December.

Short-line Leaders Meet with House Rail Subcommittee Chair

Leaders of three American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) members recently met virtually with House Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Chair Donald Payne Jr. to discuss the pandemic's impact on their railroads, their hopes for the economic recovery and future legislation in the new session of Congress. The ASLRRA members told Payne about their railroads' responses to the pandemic, including the ways they adjusted operations to comply with Centers for Prevention and Disease Control recommendations while continuing to serve their customers.

Score One for Shippers in Ongoing Fuel Surcharge Case

U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Judge Paul L. Friedman denied the railroads’ motion in In re Rail Freight Fuel Surcharge Antitrust Litigation. They sought to “exclude evidence of any discussion or agreement between or among rail carriers that concerned interline movements, and to enforce the statutory bar on inferring a conspiracy from specified evidence.”

Canadian Government Revises Freight Rail Safety Rules

The Canadian government has revised key provisions governing rail safety, focusing particularly on track inspections and the transport of hazardous materials during winter operations. Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra on Monday announced changes to the Rules Respecting Key Trains and Key Routes, which are governed by the Railway Safety Act.

OSHA Cites TrinityRail for 2 August Deaths at Oklahoma Facility

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited TrinityRail and Maintenance Services over an August 2020 incident that resulted in two fatalities. OSHA is suggesting $419,347 in penalties, and it cited Trinity for 11 serious violations and two willful violations for not following federal safety standards for working in confined spaces.
