Mixed Forecast for Chemicals This Year

Basic chemicals production appears to have dropped by about 1.3% during 2020. However, the leading chemical associations saw a statistical recovery under way as 2020 entered the second half of the year.

Transborder Freight by Rail Rose in October from September's Level

Transborder freight moved by rail between the United States, Canada and Mexico rose 5% to $14.5 billion worth of goods in October 2020 compared with September 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported last week. Year over year (YOY), freight moved by rail in October fell 0.4%, according to a BTS press release.

A Dem-Controlled Senate Boosts Hope That Major Infrastructure Bill Will Pass in 2021

Both Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, the Democrats who claimed Senate seats after winning Georgia runoffs, are both big advocates of transit and green infrastructure. The Democrats now hold a slim majority in the Senate, and word is already circulating that a historical infrastructure bill could be passed once the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act expires in September.

Colorado Pacific Objects to UP's Tennessee Pass Rail Line Deal

The Colorado Pacific Railroad intends to object to a new commercial agreement between Union Pacific Railroad and Colorado, Midland & Pacific Railway Co. (CMP) that calls for CMP to operate the Tennessee Pass rail line between Canon City and Eagle, Colorado. A new subsidiary of Rio Grande Pacific Corp., CMP and UP recently agreed that the short line also will explore community interest in operating commuter-rail service on the line and the development of additional freight-rail opportunities.

Patriot Rail Taps Itzkoff as Chief Policy Officer

Patriot Rail Co. LLC and Patriot Port Holdings LLC has appointed Donald Itzkoff chief policy officer. Most recently, Itzkoff headed global government affairs for Wabtec Corp., and earlier led U.S. government affairs for GE Transportation.

NTSB Investigates Fatal October CSX Accident

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its preliminary findings regarding a fatal incident in October at CSX’s Acca rail yard in Richmond, Virginia. The cause of the incident is still pending.

Schultz Sworn In at STB

During the past 14 years, Schultz has served in various leadership roles with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Most recently, she served as SEPTA’s Deputy General Counsel. Prior to that, Schultz served as the Director of SEPTA Legislative Affairs and was the authority’s representative to the Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association and the Keystone Transportation Funding Coalition.

UWC Wins Gondola Car Contract in Mongolia

United Wagon Company and Bodi International, a Mongolian finance, infrastructure and mining company, signed a contract for the supply of 810 high-capacity gondola cars. The first batch of 100 wagons will be delivered to Mongolia in 2021.
