Lineage Logistics Makes $500 Million Bet on Refrigerated Rail

Cold-storage specialist Lineage Logistics is branching into rail. The warehouse owner acquired Cryo-Trans, an owner of refrigerated and insulated railcars, to capture an additional leg of the food and beverage supply chain.

Appalachian Railcar Services Acquires Progress Rail's Amarillo, Texas, Repair Facility

Appalachian Railcar Services ("ARS") has acquired the Amarillo railcar repair facility from Progress Rail, a "Caterpillar company." ARS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cathcart Rail, is one of the largest railcar repair companies in the U.S., and this facility complements the existing tank car network comprised of Lynchburg, Virginia; Elk Mills, Maryland; Hinton, West Virginia, and Kingsport, Tennessee.

Proposal to Build LNG Terminal on Delaware River Could Pose Early Test for the Biden Administration

Environmental organizations have so far been unable to stop a proposed liquefied natural gas export terminal on the Delaware River but are hoping to find allies in the incoming Biden administration. The terminal, in the New Jersey community of Gibbstown, would receive liquefied natural gas from the fracking fields of northeastern Pennsylvania by train or truck and dispatch it to the Caribbean by ship.

Manufacturers Overcame Covid-19 Setbacks to End 2020 on High Note

Factories in the U.S., Asia and Europe boosted their output as 2020 drew to a close, aided by a rise in new orders and a revival in trade that has continued despite a sharp rise in coronavirus infections across many large economies. The resilience of the global manufacturing sector contrasts with weakness in services businesses that rely on close physical proximity, and which have suffered as consumers try to lower their risk of infection and governments impose restrictions on their behavior.

BNSF/Wabtec BEL Pilot Under Way

“This initiative builds on BNSF’s existing investments in sustainable technologies including idle control, electric wide-span cranes, battery-electric hostlers, automated gates at its intermodal facilities, and Tier 4 locomotives,” BNSF noted. “BNSF partnered with Wabtec on the development of the battery-electric locomotive, which features an overall energy-management system, including onboard energy storage that, when coupled with advanced system-optimization controls, will improve consist and train performance.”

Patriot Rail Finalizes SLGW Acquisition

Patriot Rail Co. LLC has completed its acquisition of short-line operator Salt Lake Garfield & Western Railway and its related storage and transload service providers Caballero LLC and Caballero 2 LLC. The purchase represents Patriot's first bolt-on acquisition since First Sentier Investors, a global investor in infrastructure, acquired the company in October 2019, Patriot officials said in a press release.

Norfolk Southern's Bayles Named to CII's Board

Randy Bayles, group manager of ports at Norfolk Southern Corp., has been appointed to a three-year term on the Containerization & Intermodal Institute's board. Bayles has more than 35 years of supply chain and intermodal experience, including 22 years at NS, where he's responsible for business development at intermodal and automotive ports in the United States and Canada.

iCON Acquires Interest in Iowa Interstate Railroad

Railroad Development Corp. (RDC) has formed a strategic partnership with iCon Infrastructure in which iCON Infrastructure Partners V will become a 40% partner in Iowa Interstate Railroad Ltd. (IAIS). RDC will remain the majority owner of IAIS, RDC officials said in a press release.

Schlumberger Combines US Fracking Business With Liberty

Schlumberger Limited recently announced that it has completed the deal with smaller rival, Liberty Oilfield Services Inc., to contribute its onshore hydraulic fracturing business in the United States and Canada, known as OneStim. Schlumberger combined pressure pumping, pump-down perforating and Permian frac sand businesses with Liberty’s operations.

NTSB Again Stresses Need for Increased Protection of High-Hazard Flammable Material Tankers, Citing Two Recent Derailments

The recommendation requires all trains have a minimum of five non-placarded cars between any locomotive or occupied equipment transporting hazardous materials, regardless of train length and consist. The recommendation stems from two separate derailments of high-hazard flammable trains in Draffin, Kentucky, and Fort Worth, Texas, which resulted in breached tank cars and hazardous material fires.

European Commission Launches European Year of Rail

The EC has launched a new website to provide more information about the initiative and to highlight European Year of Rail activities. Notable events already confirmed include the European Year of Rail Launch on March 29, which will coincide with the start of the Portuguese presidency of the European Council.

Saudi Arabia to Cut Oil Production Sharply in Bid to Lift Prices

Saudi Arabia said it would unilaterally cut 1 million barrels a day of crude production starting next month, a surprise move signaling the kingdom’s worry that a resurgent coronavirus is threatening global economic recovery. The announcement Tuesday came after Riyadh agreed earlier in the day with other big producers to keep the group’s collective output flat, after a now-monthly assessment by the Saudi-led OPEC cartel and a group of big producers led by Russia.
