FRA Issues NPRM on Streamlining PTC Reporting

With PTC implementation due for completion Dec. 31, FRA has identified two existing provisions, 49 CFR 236.1021 and 236.1029(h), which, if not revised, “could impede the industry’s ability to advance PTC technology efficiently” in the future and “FRA’s ability to oversee the performance and reliability of PTC systems effectively.” The agency seeks to modify how the host railroad submits a request for amendment to FRA before making certain changes to its PTC Safety Plan and FRA-certified PTC system.

Court Action Prevents Union from Striking Against Union Pacific

A U.S. federal court has temporarily restricted union members from striking against Union Pacific over concerns about the railroad’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic among a category of workers. The U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska Wednesday sided with Union Pacific’s (UP) petition to prevent members of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division from striking against UP.

GATX Corporation Acquires Tank Container Lessor Trifleet Leasing

GATX Corporation today announced its acquisition of Trifleet Leasing Holding B.V., the fourth largest global tank container lessor. Headquartered in the Netherlands with offices worldwide, Trifleet owns and manages a fleet of over 18,000 tank containers leased to a diverse customer base in the chemical, industrial gas, energy, food, cryogenic and pharmaceutical industries, as well as to tank container operators.

EIB and CD Cargo Sign Loan Agreement for Rolling Stock Acquisition

The European Investment Bank and CD Cargo signed a CZK 3.43 billion (EUR 130.4 million) financial agreement to support the acquisition of new electric locomotive fleet and replacement of obsolete rolling stock. The project consists of the acquisition of 50 electric locomotives and 140 freight intermodal wagons as well as retrofit of around 310 older locomotives with European Railway Traffic Management System.

CRCC Units Win Rail Contract in Thailand

The contract, awarded to China Railway 11 Bureau Group and China Railway 23 Bureau Group, covers the construction of railway subgrade, bridges and stations on a 39.8km section of line. CRCC will provide expertise and supervision for the project, while the Thai government will provide equipment and materials.

New Silk Road in 2020: Covid-19, Increased Traffic and Empty Containers

2020 started with the best indications for traffic on the New Silk Road, especially since 2019 was a year of growth.
