Canada to CN, CP: ‘Here’s Your Bill for Excellent Grain Service’

Under the Canada Transportation Act, CTA is required to determine each railroad’s annual MRE and whether each entitlement has been exceeded. The MRE is a form of economic regulation, allowing CN and CP to set their own western grain shipping rates, as long as the total revenue remains below the ceiling set by CTA.

Chart Charts Canadian Hydrogen Course

Chart, which describes itself as “a leading global manufacturer of liquefaction and cryogenic equipment serving multiple applications in the energy and industrial gas end markets, including hydrogen,” has acquired a 15.6% stake in Vancouver, B.C.-based Hydrogen Technology & Energy Corporation (HTEC), which designs, builds and operates hydrogen fuel supply solutions to support the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) electric vehicles. Chart’s C$20 million investment is in capital stock on a fully diluted basis.

ASLRRA Readies for 45G Milestone

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) reports that the $2.3 trillion omnibus appropriations/coronavirus relief/tax legislation introduced Dec. 20 in the House of Representatives includes 45G, which supports private investment in improving and building infrastructure up to a $3,500 cap per short line railroad mile. In this new legislation, the credit would remain at the current $3,500 per mile limit indefinitely; no expiration date will be built into the law.

Rail Union Mulls Action Against Union Pacific over COVID-19 Woes

The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division is threatening to take action against Union Pacific, saying that the railroad hasn’t done enough to protect workers against the COVID-19 pandemic. The union, which is affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, said it would take action if Union Pacific didn’t respond to safety demands by Sunday.

Argentina Selects Chinese Companies to Restore Freight Lines and Supply Trains

The recipients of the contracts include China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), China Machinery Engineering Corporation, CRRC Corporation Limited and Yutong. The work covered by the four contracts are intended to increase the competitiveness of Argentina’s agricultural exports and boost regional connectivity and employment, as well as lowering the logistical costs and environmental impact of the country’s rail sector.
