US Weekly Rail Traffic Almost At Last Year's Levels

U.S. rail volumes are still lower compared to last year, although that gap narrowed last week. The U.S. freight railroads originated 521,956 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending Sept. 19, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR). This is 1.3% lower than the same period in 2019.
 

Norfolk Southern's 2020 Corporate Responsibility Report Highlights Commitment to a More Sustainable Future

Customers who ship with Norfolk Southern helped avoid almost 15 million metric tons of carbon emissions in 2019 by choosing rail for their transportation needs instead of highway shipping, according to Norfolk Southern's recently released Corporate Responsibility report. That equates to saving approximately 1.5 billion gallons of diesel fuel.

FTS International Announces Amended RSA, Launch of Comprehensive Prepackaged Restructuring Plan

FTS International, Inc. today announced that it has entered into a second amended and restated restructuring support agreement with creditors holding approximately 87.55% of the principal amount outstanding of the company's secured debt and intends to file voluntary cases under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas on September 22, 2020.
 

Federal Railroad Administration Awards CRISI Grants

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has awarded $320.6 million to 50 projects in 29 states as part of a grant program aimed at helping localities, short lines and passenger railroads improve the safety and efficiency of their rail networks. The monies came from the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) program, a five-year program authorized by the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act to improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of intercity passenger and freight rail systems.

China's Surging Corn Prices Blamed on Speculators as Beijing Plays Down Fears of Grain Shortage

China's agriculture minister has blamed speculators for skyrocketing corn prices, as Beijing continues to reassure the public the world's most populous country is not facing a grain shortage. Corn price recently hit an eight-year high following typhoons and floods that damaged the nation's corn belt.
