The Association of American Railroads reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ended Aug. 22, 2020, which saw, for the third consecutive week, U.S. weekly intermodal volume up from the same week last year.
 

BTS: Transborder Freight Moved by Rail Fell in June

Transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation between the United States and Canada and Mexico fell 20.9% to $82.1 billion worth of goods in June compared with June 2019 levels, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported yesterday.
 

UP Levying $500 Surcharge in Seattle Next Month

Union Pacific Railroad will issue a $500 surcharge on all excess contract cargo in Seattle beginning Sept. 6, the latest attempt by the western US railroad to shift as much available 53-foot intermodal equipment to Southern California as possible amid an ongoing cargo surge there.
 

Canada's Crude-By-Rail Exports Reach Eight-Year Low

Canadian exports of crude oil by rail fell to 42,820 barrels per day in June, an eight-year low, according to a report by Kallanish Energy. Citing Canada Energy Regulator data, the energy news outlet reported that June's total shipments were the lowest since June 2012, when volume moved was 33,758 barrels per day.
 

CN, Wabtec Appoint New Chief Technology Officers

Class I Canadian railway CN and rail equipment manufacturer Wabtec each named new chief technology officers on Wednesday. Dominique Malenfant will join CN Tuesday as an executive vice president and chief information and technology officer. With Malenfant's departure, Wabtec announced Wednesday that Eric Gebhardt would take up the role as its new CTO and executive vice president.

Cancelled Chinese Contract Delays Completion of India's Dedicated Freight Corridors

Indian Railways’ decision on June 18 to cancel the Rs 4.7bn (US $63.3m) signalling contract with the Beijing National Railway Research and Design Institute has had an adverse impact on the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors, with the completion deadlines for the two lines now extended by six months.
