No 'Bomb Trains': 14 States Aim to Take New Rule on LNG Transport Off the Rails

14 states — including Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware — and the District of Columbia have filed a legal challenge to a new federal rule that would allow trains to carry liquefied natural gas (LNG) across the country. The states' move coincides with a petition filed by environmental organizations that also hope to block the rule, which was approved in late July by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
 

Environmental Groups, States Sue Feds Over LNG By Rail

The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration in June authorized the bulk transportation of LNG by rail, and the rule was expected to take effect Monday, a month after it was published in the Federal Register. The rule, which was made in consultation with the Federal Railroad Administration, allows for the bulk transportation of LNG using DOT-113 tank cars with enhanced outer tank requirements and additional operational controls.
 

Seals-Shop Aims to Ameliorate Chemical Transportation Customers' Procurement Process

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has launched the Chemical Transportation Seals-Shop, an e-commerce site that aims to simplify the procurement process for the company's customers in the chemical transportation industry. The Seals-Shop "delivers 24/7 access to online ordering of repair kits for valves and other components critical to the function of tank cars, trucks and ISO containers used for chemical transport."
 

Freight RAILCAR Act Introduced

Six U.S. Representatives—three Democrats and three Republicans—have introduced bipartisan legislation enabling a tax credit for freight railcar owners purchasing new or refurbishing existing equipment that "will incentivize investment in safer, greener freight railcar manufacturing in the United States." The legislation, H.R. 8082, is the "Freight Rail Assistance and Investment to Launch Coronavirus-era Activity and Recovery (RAILCAR) Act."
 

Brazil-US Row Over Ethanol, Sugar Tariffs Heats Up

Just 10 days before Brazil's tariff-free import quota on ethanol expires, the country's trade authorities are insisting that the US drop tariffs on Brazilian sugar or all US ethanol entering Brazil will be subject to the full brunt of a 20pc import tariff. Brazil's 750mn-liter (12,924 b/d) tariff-free quota for ethanol imports expires on 31 August.
 

Ports Closed As Tropical Cyclones Approach US (With Forecast Video)

For the first time in more than 60 years, two named tropical cyclones could be spinning in the Gulf of Mexico at the same time. Tropical Storm Marco, which was a Category 1 hurricane for a brief time, ran into some wind shear Sunday night. It's back to a tropical storm, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph as of 8 a.m. EDT Monday. Right behind Marco is Tropical Storm Laura, which will dump flooding rainfall across much of Cuba on Monday. By Tuesday, it will head into the Gulf of Mexico, likely becoming a Category 1 hurricane.
